about

When he isn't holding down the complex afrobeat of Big Mean Sound Machine as their lead guitarist, Ray McNamara tinkers away at his avant-pop solo project, The Ghost of Electricity. His upcoming release, BONES, is distinguished by tUnE-yArDs-esque vocal hooks, thick Dirty Projectors harmonies and Kid A sound collages. But what really sets BONES apart is its beats. Ray samples the sounds of car parts and bones to form the bulk of the music's freaky rhythmic skeleton. It is roughly the percussive palette of Bone Machine Tom Waits, but grooving to a logic foreign to most rock listeners.

BONES marks a leap forward for The Ghost of Electricity. It is a six track conceptual suite, a big-ideas spiritual treatise working within (most) of the boundaries of the three-minute pop song.
The music of BONES is set in a philosophical realm of elemental forces, dark technologies and an indifferent god. The album closes with a blend of Nigerian highlife, Zimbabwean chimurenga, American electric guitar, and electronic sampling of a South American tribe of cannibals singing. It is the joyful musical fulfillment of the lyrics that precede it:

I will play with the kids
Distract them while your flesh is prepared
Keep them happy and laughing
I wear your bones in my hair.

Not for the faint of heart.

Track Name: The Ritual
The Ritual

On the horizon
Sun sets it’s fire
Wind whispers red
Blood runs dry
Waiting to meet you where the whole world ends
Face painted and naked
In a dry riverbed

I wear your BONES in my hair
Rattle fistfuls of car parts
And BONES
I wear your BONES in my hair

Black as the void
Black as my mind
Future is infinite
Past is a lie
Perception is suspect
Ears, nose, eyes
I draw a line at the edge of my mind
I come and go

I wear your BONES in my hair
Rattle fistfuls of car parts
And BONES
I wear your BONES in my hair
Rattle fistfuls of car parts
And BONES
I wear your BONES in my hair
Track Name: The Question
The Question

In all my searching
Not a truth that I can point to
In all my questioning
The only answer I’ve found
That I will likely never know

The past is a lie
The future’s infinitely wide
I draw a line
At the edge of my mind
And on the other side
An artists depiction of the truth
And I could be a painter

Cosmos or consciousness
Which inside the other?
Cosmos or consciousness
Verity or consequence?
Track Name: The Great Tower
The Great Tower

Oh great tower
We worship at your alter
Snatch up what you offer
We are eating from your hand

Steel and wire
Like God without the kindness
Worse than Satan’s finest
Wash us in the blood of the land

Air and water
You lead us in our blindness
Kill us with your kindness
Leave us high and dry

Oh great tower
God has shown his hand, but hides his face
Great tower of Babylon
Move us at 100 miles an hour
To our graves
Track Name: The Anthropophage
Beware the desperate people hunting in the forest
We will not hesitate
To kill for our family
You are just meat to me
I have my children and my poor sickly mother
Even cannibals Love
Don’t get confused I have not mercy for you
I will drink your blood

I found a campfire
And the dog has caught a scent
You’d better move in a hurry
For we hunt with the Devil now (Might end up someone elses food)

We will drum upon your still warm dead body
Our hands wet with blood
Tear out your heart right there if we’re hungry enough
And I’m hungry enough

I will play with the kids
Distract them while your flesh is prepared
Keep them happy and laughing
I wear your BONES in my hair
Rattle fistfuls of car parts
And BONES
I wear your BONES in my hair
